My Little Story of "Old New Orleans"...
It's been about 8 years since Hurricane Katrina ripped through New Orleans and the hearts of anyone who felt the impact. I am not from New Orleans, yet unexplainably, I call New Orleans "Home" on many levels. I had only been once prior-- Jazzfest 2003-- a mere 4 months before the landscape would be changed forever. Being there was a sublime experience that had also changed me forever...When the hurricane slammed into shore in I was so heartbroken for the devastation to what I consider to be the Soul of America, that I wrote "Old New Orleans" that very day...
Last October I got to meet a couple of my biggest musical heroes, Paul Barrere and Kenny Gradney of Little Feat(my favorite band of all time), and they introduced me to Tony Braunagel, a Grammy award winning producer and drummer of such greats as Taj Majal, Bonnie Raiit, John Cleary, and countless others. Together we freshly carved out the song, reinventing moments as we went along the day of recording. It couldn't have been a better collaboration, and I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the whole experience.
In an eerie coincidence, we ended up recording the exact day that Hurricane Sandy-- the most destructive since Katrina, made its landfall, a fresh reminder of the tragic impact that Katrina brought. With the help of Paul, Kenny, Tony, Teresa James, and all the rest who helped this day happen, I got to finally express my transported feelings about it all...
Thanks for listening and Jam on,
-Michael
